A Day in the Life of a Loans Adviser

As the Devon Loans Adviser, I spend a lot of time out and about across the district which I love having grown up in Exeter. It is so difficult to say what a ‘typical’ day looks like, as every home is different and every homeowner has a different financial situation.

I may start my morning in Exeter visiting a young couple who have just bought their first home and are applying for a home improvement loan to update the heating system. I could then be heading to rural Mid Devon to visit a single person in a beautiful character cottage.  I love visiting the older properties of Devon but understand that these are not the easiest (or cheapest!) homes to live in.  Repairs are costly and frequent, and keeping rural homes warm without spending a large proportion of income is challenging!  I am always surprised by the number of homes in Devon without any form of central heating system and would always signpost homeowners to grant services, such as LEAP so they can be checked for boiler grant eligibility before we consider a loan application.

While the majority of our home improvement loans are for heating or roof repairs, two of the most fundamental home repairs tasks, there is no end to the variety of loans for other purposes such as replacement windows, kitchens or bathrooms or more structural repairs such as gable end work, repointing, re-plastering, or damp repair. Whilst no technical expert, it is fair to say I have learnt a lot about home repairs over the years!

Perhaps the best part of my role, aside from helping a wide range of homeowners fund home improvements, is the no-sales approach to lending and our keenness to signpost people to other services which may complement our home improvement loan service or which may be more suitable for the individual’s needs.

So there you have it, a not-so-typical day in the life of the Devon Loans Adviser!
