Scam awareness and how to protect yourself against fraud

Raising scam awareness with the Trading Standards South West’s campaigns

In today’s world, the threat of scams impacts individuals from all walks of life. From deceptive emails to fraudulent phone calls, scammers employ various tactics to exploit unsuspecting victims. Recognising the urgency of addressing this growing menace, Trading Standards South West has launched a vital initiative known as ScamWise, aimed at equipping individuals with scam awareness and knowledge.

ScamWise

ScamWise serves as a resourceful hub, offering essential information and guidance to individuals on spotting, preventing, and reporting scams. Whether it’s fraudulent lottery schemes or deceptive miracle cures, scammers employ a range of strategies to deceive and defraud unsuspecting victims. Through ScamWise, the Trading Standards South West aims to spread the knowledge needed to recognise and avoid falling victim to scams.

Doorstep Crime

A central focus of Trading Standards South West‘s campaign is Doorstep Crime, which includes various fraudulent activities such as distraction burglary, bogus callers, and rogue traders. These crimes often target vulnerable individuals, coercing them into unfair contracts or providing substandard services, resulting in financial loss and emotional distress.
